Why use a walking stick?
A walking stick is a mobility aid used to support and offload an injured leg or prevent falls. By reducing the amount of weight placed on the affected leg, it can help facilitate injury recovery, reduce pain and reduce limping. When used correctly it can be used to prevent falls and help you maintain your balance by increasing your base of support.
There are different types of walking sticks depending on the targeted application. They should be fitted appropriately by a Physiotherapist or a GP.
Which hand should I use my walking stick in?
- Your walking stick should be used in the OPPOSITE side/ hand to your injured leg.
- For example: right knee osteoarthritis would require you to use the walking stick with your left hand.
- If you are using it to assist with your balance only then you should use the walking stick in your dominant hand.
What is the right height for my walking stick?
- The handle should be inline with the crease of your wrist. You can measure this by standing with your arm relaxed by your side.
- You should have a small bend in your elbow when walking with the stick if it set at the correct height

- Bring your stick up either with your injured leg or LAST
Going DOWN stairs – think BAD LEG TO HELL!
