This is a simple static balance exercise where you stand with your feet together while keeping your eyes open. It challenges your postural control by narrowing your base of support, encouraging your body to rely on ankle and core strategies to stay upright. It’s commonly used to improve balance, proprioception, and stability, particularly in the ankles, calves, and deep trunk muscles.
- Perform in front of/next to a bench, so that you can catch yourself if you lose your balance. Perform only when under supervision if necessary.
- Stand upright with your feet together so that your big toes and heels are touching or as close as possible.
- Keep your arms relaxed by your sides or lightly resting on a stable surface if needed.
- Look straight ahead and keep your eyes open, focusing on a fixed point at eye level.
- Maintain an upright posture without leaning.
- Distribute your weight evenly across both feet.
- Try to remain as still as possible, minimising any swaying.
- Hold/maintain as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
