Rigid wrist taping provides support and stability to the wrist joint, helping to manage injuries such as sprains, strains, or instability. It is also a preventive measure during high-risk activities like weightlifting, gymnastics, or racquet sports. Proper application is essential to ensure the tape is effective and comfortable.

Materials Needed

  • Rigid sports tape (25–38 mm wide, depending on wrist size).
  • Pre-wrap or hypoallergenic underwrap (optional for sensitive skin).
  • Scissors or tape cutter.

Preparation

  1. Position the Hand and Wrist:
    • The individual should sit comfortably with their forearm resting on a flat surface.
    • The wrist should be in a neutral position: not excessively bent forward (flexion) or backward (extension). The fingers should be relaxed.
  2. Skin Preparation:
    • Clean the skin and ensure it is dry and free of oils or lotions.
    • Shave the area if necessary to minimise discomfort during tape removal.
    • Apply hypoallergenic underwrap if the skin is sensitive or prone to irritation.

Step-by-Step Taping Instructions

1. Anchor Strips:

  • Apply a strip of hypo-allergenic tape around the wrist, about 2–3 cm above the wrist joint. This is the wrist anchor.
  • Repeat this step a second time

2. Support Strips:

  • Repeat this action with rigid tape.
  • Avoid excessive tension to prevent obstruction to the circulation.

Post-Taping Check

  • Comfort: Ensure the taped wrist feels supported but not overly tight. The fingers and thumb should move freely.
  • Circulation: Check for signs of restricted blood flow, such as discolouration or swelling in the fingers.
  • Functionality: The taping should restrict excessive movement in the wrist (e.g., bending or twisting) while allowing functional use.

Tips for Effective Taping

  • Keep each strip of tape smooth and free of wrinkles to avoid discomfort or skin irritation.
  • Overlap each strip by half its width to create a secure and durable taping job.
  • Apply the tape with moderate tension to provide support without cutting off circulation.
  • Remove the tape carefully after use to prevent skin irritation. Use adhesive remover or warm water if needed.
