  • Supine shoulder flexions/extensions and horizontal abduction/adductions are gentle mobility exercises for the shoulder complex.
  • The movements help to activate muscles such as the rotator cuff, serratus anterior, pectoralis major and deltoid while promoting smooth scapular control.
  • Performing the exercise in a supine position reduces the load on the shoulder and provides stability from the floor, making it useful in early rehabilitation.
  • Lie on your back on a firm surface.
  • Point your hand straight to the ceiling with your wrist stacked over your shoulder.
  • Slowly begin to draw small lines up and down (towards your toes and back towards your head), keeping your arm pointing upward with elbow straight but relaxed.
  • Allow the movement to come from the shoulder joint and shoulder blade.
  • Avoid bending your elbow or allowing your shoulder to shrug towards your ear.
  • Then slowly draw small lines side to side (towards your midline and away from your midline).
  • Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
