Supine shoulder flexions/extensions and horizontal abduction/adductions are gentle mobility exercises for the shoulder complex.
The movements help to activate muscles such as the rotator cuff, serratus anterior, pectoralis major and deltoid while promoting smooth scapular control.
Performing the exercise in a supine position reduces the load on the shoulder and provides stability from the floor, making it useful in early rehabilitation.
Lie on your back on a firm surface.
Point your hand straight to the ceiling with your wrist stacked over your shoulder.
Slowly begin to draw small lines up and down (towards your toes and back towards your head), keeping your arm pointing upward with elbow straight but relaxed.
Allow the movement to come from the shoulder joint and shoulder blade.
Avoid bending your elbow or allowing your shoulder to shrug towards your ear.
Then slowly draw small lines side to side (towards your midline and away from your midline).
Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
