The Banana Cobra Right Side Glide (McKenzie exercise) is a directional preference exercise commonly prescribed for people with low back pain that radiates into the buttock or leg, particularly when symptoms are thought to originate from the lumbar spine. The exercise combines a side glide with lumbar extension to encourage movement of the spine in a specific direction, often helping to reduce leg pain by centralising symptoms back towards the lower back. It primarily targets the lumbar spine and surrounding muscles rather than strengthening them, with the goal of improving spinal mobility and reducing pain.

  • Starting on your stomach, keep your upper body straight and take your legs over towards the right to create a ‘banana’ shape
  • Using your arms push yourself up whilst keeping your hips on the ground
  • Return to the starting position and repeat as prescribed by your physiotherapist
