Extension over a bench is a lumbar spine mobility exercise that encourages gentle extension through the lower back. It is commonly prescribed to improve lumbar extension range of motion, reduce stiffness, and help restore normal movement of the lower spine. For some people with low back pain, particularly those who respond well to extension-based movements, this exercise may also help reduce or centralise symptoms and improve tolerance to standing and walking.
- Stand facing away from stable bench and position the front of your hips against the edge of the bench.
- Place your hands the bench for support.
- Keeping your feet firmly on the floor, gently lean backwards over the bench, allowing your lower back to extend.
- Only move as far as is comfortable or as directed by your physiotherapist.
- Return to the starting position in a slow and controlled manner.
- Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
