  • Cervical extension PNF is a neck strengthening and motor control exercise performed through a straight extension pattern, without a rotational component.
  • It primarily works the cervical extensor muscles, including the splenius, semispinalis and deeper cervical extensors.
  • The exercise may be prescribed to improve neck strength, proprioception, postural control and the ability to control the head during functional movements.
  • Come into a comfortable upright position either sitting or standing.
  • Place your hands behind your head and direct your neck backwards into a comfortable range.
  • Apply pressure externally from the hands to stop movement into backward neck bend.
  • Ensure it is within a comfortable range.
  • Sustain the contraction for the period of time instructed by your treating Physiotherapist, then repeat as prescribed.
