This exercise helps improve deep neck flexor strength and posture by encouraging gentle retraction of the head while maintaining an upright thoracic spine position.
The rolled towel placed behind the thoracic spine blocks the thoracic to isolate cervical movement.
It is commonly prescribed for neck pain, forward head posture, postural dysfunction and cervical spine rehabilitation.
Stand with your back against a wall.
Position a rolled towel vertically between your shoulder blades, separating your upper back and the wall.
Stand tall with your shoulders relaxed and your chin level with the floor.
Gently draw your chin straight backwards, as if making a “double chin”.
Keep the back of your head moving towards the wall without tilting your head up or down.
You can add an overpressure by gently pressing two fingers into your chin in this end position.
Slowly relax back to the starting position.
Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
