The chin tuck with self-block of the thoracic spine is a postural and mobility exercise that helps improve movement of the neck while minimising compensation through the upper back.
By stabilising the thoracic spine, the exercise encourages movement from the cervical spine and activates the deep neck flexor muscles.
Sit upright in a chair with your feet flat on the floor.
Place your hands firmly on the back surface of your shoulders with your elbows pointing high and forwards.
Gently lock and pull your upper back forwards using your hands.
Whilst maintaining the pull with your hands, slowly draw your chin straight backwards, creating a “double chin” without tilting your head up or down.
Hold the end position briefly while keeping your upper back still in the “pulled” position.
Slowly relax and return your chin to the starting position.
Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
