The deep squat stretch is a mobility exercise that helps improve flexibility and movement through the ankles, hips and lower back while encouraging an upright squat position.
It targets the calf muscles, hip muscles, glutes and adductors.
Physiotherapists often prescribe this stretch to improve squat mechanics, reduce stiffness and assist with activities that require bending, lifting or prolonged sitting.
Stand with your feet approximately shoulder-width apart, with your toes turned slightly out if comfortable.
Slowly lower into a deep squat as far as you can while keeping your heels in contact with the floor.
Bring your elbows inside your knees and gently press your knees outward.
Keep your chest lifted and your spine long.
Shift your weight gently from side to side if comfortable to explore the stretch through your hips and ankles.
Breathe slowly and relax into the position without forcing the movement.
Hold/maintain as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
