The doorway lat stretch is used to improve flexibility through the latissimus dorsi, a large muscle that runs from the lower back and pelvis up to the upper arm. It can help reduce tightness through the side of the trunk, improve overhead shoulder range, and support better posture and shoulder mechanics.
- Stand in front of a doorway with your feet hip-width apart.
- Reach one straight arm up and hold the door frame at roughly shoulder height.
- turn your body towards the raised arm by moving your feet, such that your raised arm is now slightly crossing in front of your chest.
- Gently shift your hips away from the doorway until you feel a stretch along the side of your body and under your arm.
- Breathe slowly and maintain a comfortable stretch.
- Hold/maintain as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
