This exercise is used to improve elbow extension, particularly when the elbow is stiff and does not fully straighten. Using the wall for support and gentle overpressure can help increase mobility through the elbow joint and stretch tissues that may be limiting extension. It is commonly prescribed when restoring elbow range of motion after injury, immobilisation or surgery, when appropriate.
- Stand facing a wall and place the palm of the affected arm flat against the wall at approximately shoulder height.
- Keep your shoulder relaxed and your palm firmly in contact with the wall.
- Gently straighten your elbow as far as comfortably possible.
- Once you reach the end of your available movement, use your opposite hand to apply gentle pressure just above the affected elbow.
- Gradually increase the pressure to encourage the elbow into further extension. You should feel a firm stretch, rather than sharp or increasing pain.
- Keep your upper arm and shoulder steady and avoid twisting your body to create extra movement.
- Hold/maintain as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
