This McKenzie lumbar flexion rotation exercise combines forward bending with trunk rotation to the left. It is commonly prescribed to improve lumbar spine mobility, particularly when symptoms or movement restrictions are more pronounced on one side. The exercise aims to restore movement, reduce stiffness, and improve the flexibility of the lower back and surrounding tissues. It may also help centralise symptoms and improve functional movement patterns when prescribed appropriately by your physiotherapist.

  • Position yourself on the ground or on your bed
  • Optional pillow behind head and 1-2 pillows to your left side (as instructed by your physiotherapist)
  • Gently take your knees over to your left side, stack both knees on top of one another
  • Place your left hand on top of your knees and right hand on the bottom of your rib cage
  • Breathe gently, hold this position and repeat as prescribed by your physiotherapist
