Standing hip abduction isometric into a wall is a strengthening and stability exercise that targets the hip abductors, particularly the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. By pressing the outside of the leg into a wall without allowing movement, the exercise creates an isometric contraction around the hip. It is commonly prescribed to improve lateral hip strength, pelvic control and single-leg stability, which can support activities such as walking, running and climbing stairs.
- Stand side-on to a wall with the exercising leg closest to the wall.
- Position yourself close enough that the outside of your foot can comfortably contact the wall.
- Keep your feet facing forwards and maintain an upright posture.
- Press the outside of your foot into the wall as though you are trying to move your leg out to the side.
- Keep your body still and avoid leaning your trunk or allowing your pelvis to rotate.
- Maintain steady pressure into the wall and breathe normally throughout the exercise.
- Hold/maintain as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
