The kettlebell deadlift is a lower body strengthening exercise that targets the gluteal muscles, hamstrings and quadriceps, while also engaging the core and spinal muscles to maintain a stable posture. It is commonly prescribed to improve hip hinge mechanics, build lower limb strength, enhance lifting technique and develop functional movement patterns for everyday activities such as lifting objects from the floor.
- Stand with your feet approximately shoulder width apart, with the kettlebell positioned on the floor between your feet.
- Stand tall with your chest lifted, shoulders relaxed and your core gently engaged.
- Push your hips backwards while maintaining a neutral spine, allowing a slight bend in your knees as you lower towards the kettlebell.
- Reach down and grasp the handle firmly with both hands.
- Drive through your heels and extend your hips and knees together to stand upright, keeping the kettlebell close to your body throughout the movement.
- At the top of the movement, stand tall without leaning backwards or shrugging your shoulders.
- Slowly push your hips backwards again, bending your knees as needed to lower the kettlebell back to the floor in a controlled manner.
- Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
