This McKenzie-based lumbar side glide exercise is designed to improve movement through the right side of the lower back and may help reduce pain associated with a lumbar lateral shift or side-glide restriction. The doorway stabilises the upper body, allowing the movement to occur primarily through the lumbar spine as the hips glide to the left. It is commonly prescribed to restore spinal mobility and assist with symptom centralisation.

  • Stand in the centre of a doorway with your feet approximately shoulder-width apart.
  • Place one hand on each side of the doorframe at about shoulder height.
  • Keep your shoulders level throughout the exercise.
  • Maintain an upright posture with your chest facing forwards.
  • Keeping your upper body steady against the doorframe, slowly shift your hips towards the left.
  • Allow the movement to occur through your lower back without rotating or leaning your shoulders.
  • Move only as far as is comfortable or as directed by your physiotherapist.
  • Slowly return to the starting position.
  • Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
