Using a trigger ball to release the muscles around the rotator cuff can help reduce muscle tension, improve shoulder mobility and relieve discomfort caused by tight or overactive muscles. This technique is commonly used to target muscles such as the infraspinatus, teres minor and the muscles around the back of the shoulder. It is often prescribed to improve shoulder movement, reduce pain and prepare the shoulder for strengthening exercises.

  • Stand with your back beside a wall and place a trigger ball between the wall and the back of your shoulder.
  • Position the ball over a tender or tight area around the back of the shoulder, avoiding direct pressure on the shoulder blade or bony areas.
  • Lean gently into the ball until you feel comfortable, moderate pressure.
  • Slowly roll your body up and down or side to side to massage the surrounding muscle.
  • When you find a particularly tight spot, pause and maintain gentle pressure while breathing slowly and allowing the muscle to relax.
  • Keep your shoulder relaxed and avoid shrugging or tensing during the release.
  • Move the ball to different areas around the back of the shoulder as needed.
  • Hold as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
