- Sit or stand upright with your shoulders relaxed.
- Turn your head slightly away from the side you are treating. This will make the SCM more prominent.
- Locate the SCM by tracing the rope-like muscle that runs from just behind your ear down towards your collarbone.
- Using a “hamburger grip”, place your thumb on one side of the muscle and your fingers on the other side so the muscle is gently held between them.
- Gently lift the muscle away from the deeper tissues beneath it.
- Apply a comfortable squeezing pressure and slowly move your fingers up and down along the length of the muscle.
- Pause on any tender areas and maintain gentle pressure while breathing normally.
- Keep your jaw, shoulders, and neck relaxed throughout the technique.
- Hold/maintain as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
