  • Wash your hands thoroughly before performing the exercise.
  • Sit upright in a comfortable position with your jaw relaxed.
  • To locate the TMJ, place a fingertip just in front of your ear and slowly open and close your mouth. You will feel the joint moving beneath your finger.
  • Place your thumb inside your mouth along the lower molars on the side you wish to treat.
  • Wrap your fingers around the outside of your jaw so your hand gently grips the lower jaw.
  • Apply a gentle sideways pressure to the jaw.
  • Maintain a gentle, sustained pressure while keeping the jaw relaxed.
  • The movement should feel like a mild stretch or mobilisation and should not reproduce significant pain.
  • Hold/maintain as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
