Supinated shoulder flexion isometric is a strengthening exercise that activates the muscles at the front of the shoulder, particularly the anterior deltoid and biceps, while also engaging the rotator cuff and shoulder blade stabilisers to maintain good alignment. It is commonly prescribed to improve shoulder strength, stability and tendon loading while minimising joint movement, making it suitable during the early stages of rehabilitation or when movement is painful.
- Stand or sit upright with your arm by your side and your palm facing forwards (supinated position).
- Bend your elbow to the position prescribed by your physiotherapist, keeping your palm facing upwards.
- Place your hand against a stable surface or have your other hand provide resistance in front of you.
- Gently attempt to lift your arm forwards into shoulder flexion while resisting the movement so that your arm does not move.
- Maintain a steady contraction without holding your breath.
- Keep your shoulder relaxed and avoid shrugging or leaning your body.
- Hold as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
