- Thoracic extension on a foam roller is a mobility exercise designed to improve movement through the upper back (thoracic spine).
- It helps reduce stiffness and can improve overhead shoulder movement by increasing extension through the thoracic spine.
- This exercise is commonly prescribed for people with thoracic stiffness, upper back tightness, neck discomfort, or restricted shoulder mobility.
- Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet/bottom flat on the floor.
- Position the foam roller horizontally across your upper back.
- Support your head and neck by gently interlocking your fingers behind your head.
- Position your elbows close together, directed towards the ceiling.
- Gently lean backwards over the foam roller, allowing your upper back to extend while keeping your hips on the floor.
- Pause briefly at the end of the movement without forcing into pain.
- Return to the starting position in a slow and controlled manner.
- Move the foam roller slightly higher or lower along your upper back and repeat if instructed by your physiotherapist.
- Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
