This McKenzie exercise is commonly used to help reduce lower back pain that is felt more on one side and may be associated with a lateral shift of the trunk. The movement aims to improve lumbar spine mobility, encourage centralisation of symptoms, and restore a more neutral spinal position. It primarily targets the structures around the lumbar spine while promoting better alignment and movement control through the lower back and pelvis.

  • Stand side-on to a wall with your left shoulder on the wall
  • Position your feet together and approximately 1 foot from the wall
  • Keep your shoulders level and your chest facing forwards.
  • Gently shift your pelvis towards the wall
  • Move as far as comfortably tolerated, maintaining a relaxed breathing pattern.
  • Pause briefly at the end of the movement.
  • Slowly return to the starting position.
  • Keep your head upright and avoid rotating your body during the movement.
  • Complete repetitions as prescribed by your physiotherapist.
